What Is Outpatient Treatment?
Drug and alcohol rehab programs are available in varying levels of care to meet the unique requirements of each individual. While individuals with severe drug and alcohol dependencies may require inpatient rehab programs or partial hospitalization, those with more manageable problems can often benefit from less intensive outpatient programs.
Outpatient treatment is often recommended for people who need help, but whose drug and alcohol problems have not significantly interfered with their career, school, or family life. The ability to build a career, pursue an education, or spend time with supportive friends and family members are important aspects of life that can all work in conjunction with and benefit from the skills learned in a successful outpatient program.

How Is Outpatient Treatment Used?
Depending on the severity and duration of an individual’s drug or alcohol program, outpatient treatment may be recommended from the outset. Patients can also transition into outpatient treatment after the successful completion of an inpatient or partial hospitalization treatment program.
What Does Outpatient Treatment Include?
Outpatient drug and alcohol rehab programs offer a variety of support services that patients can incorporate into their busy schedules.
Individual Counseling
One-on-one counseling with a substance abuse specialist is a core component of any drug or alcohol rehab program. Individual therapy can help identify the underlying causes of addiction and provide a patient with tools for overcoming the circumstances that have led to drug and alcohol abuse in the past.
Counseling may include approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and rational emotive behavior therapy. Both of these are forms of talk therapy that allow patients to explore the underlying emotions and beliefs that have contributed to their drug and alcohol use. Examining the thoughts and beliefs behind the addiction is an important part of treatment, as persistent negative belief patterns often cause addicts to fall into relapse.
Therapeutic approaches used in outpatient treatment may also include family members, spouses, or other significant people if their presence is deemed beneficial to the client.
Group Therapy
Group therapy allows clients to discuss their drug and alcohol problems in a supportive environment along with other clients. In some cases, group therapy can be more beneficial than individual therapy, as it allows clients to interact with others who are experiencing many of the same challenges.

Group therapy also creates a supportive environment in which clients can improve communication and socialization skills, and learn to relate to others in healthier ways.
Substance Abuse Education
Understanding why addiction occurs and how different substances affect the body is important in overcoming any form of abuse or addiction. Substance abuse education can help clients understand the impact of addiction on the individual as well as on relationships, wider social networks, and society as a whole.
Physical Activities
Outpatient programs may include physical activities such as yoga, which has proven to be useful in addiction recovery due to its ability to reduce stress, promote feelings of calmness, and increase self-awareness.
Recreational Therapy
Recreational therapy involves the use of activities that directly impact an individual’s health and wellness as well as their ability to function independently in life. Recreational therapy can be useful in reducing feelings of stress, depression, and anxiety.
